What We Do

Resin damaged by Chlorine Pictures of the damage chlorine can cause.

All mains water utility companies use low levels of chlorine in the water supplies to stop bacteria forming within the water pipes and within your home BUT it does have a strong distinctive foul smell and taste.

It is RARE for any mains water utility company to add large volumes of chlorine to the water supply - this normally only happens if they have done work on or replaced the water pipes - they then have to flush large amounts of chlorine through to kill any bacteria that may have entered the water supply. These large volumes of chlorine can damage your water softener resin. If you know that your water board is planning on doing any water works, then it may be advisable to turn your water softener on bypass until the work has been completed and that the large volumes of chlorine, sediment and discolouration have been flushed through.

We do not normally recommend chlorine removal before a water softener as low levels of chlorine are OK to pass through the resin bed as chlorine does stop bacteria from forming within the softener and your home. We do recommend that if you have a water softener then you should perhaps consider having a separate drinking tap with a filter for your drinking water to remove chlorine and other contaminants that may be present.

If you have a water softener, we recommend using our Resin Restorer every 6-12 months. Not only does our resin restorer deep clean your resin it also offers you some protection to your resin bed against low levels of chlorine.

The picture below is what happens to your resin if it gets dosed with a large amount of chlorine.

If your water softener has been exposed to high volumes of chlorine then your resin has been damaged beyond repair - Please call us for prices on purchasing new resin. We offer full technical support and full instructions to help you change over your resin.
